We know what a “second wind” is, at least in the traditional, overused sense. We’ve probably all felt a second wind before. The first time I really remember getting my second wind was in high school when I was 3 events into a 4 event gymnastics meet, and I felt like there was absolutely no way that I could even WALK to the next aparatus. And then, like something was pulling me up, I got… my second wind! Not only was I able to make it to the next event, but somehow, I managed to pull off a pretty good routine, thanks to that second wind.

Yes, we’ve all had these experiences. The second winds that help us keep moving when we think we aren’t able to push any further. But a small population, just over 2,100 young people in the Denver area, in fact, know what its like to be alive because of Second Wind.

One out of four kids in Colorado have more than passing thoughts of suicide in any given year; more than half will struggle by the time they are 20. In Colorado, suicide is the second leading cause of death for our youth, and we rank 6th in the nation for the highest suicide rate. This is a huge issue in Colorado, and luckily, there is an innovative program in the Denver area dedicated to solving it. Second Wind Fund of Metro Denver, or SWFMD.

Discover the true power of Second Wind, in a non-traditional, non-overused (is that a word? It is now!) sense through this blog. Staff, volunteers, teens, and parents will share their stories of how their lives have been forever impacted when they found Second Wind.
